How to Calculate Pro-Rata Salary

A pro-rata salary is calculated by dividing your part-time hours (or days) by the full-time equivalent, then multiplying by the full-time salary. For example, if a full-time role pays £35,000 for 5 days per week, working 3 days gives you: (3/5) × £35,000 = £21,000 pro-rata.

What Does Pro Rata Mean?

"Pro rata" is Latin for "in proportion." In employment, it means your salary is adjusted proportionally based on the hours or days you work compared to a full-time equivalent role. Your hourly rate stays the same — you just work fewer hours.

Are Holiday Entitlements Also Pro Rata?

Yes. UK employees are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday per year (28 days for full-time). Part-time workers receive holiday pro-rata. If you work 3 days per week, you'd receive 3 × 5.6 = 16.8 days of holiday per year.
